Usage instructions of GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic® and Saxenda®)

Updated this week

GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic® (Semaglutide), Saxenda® (Liraglutide), and RYBELSUS® (Oral Semaglutide), are administered in different ways depending on the specific medication and its formulation. Here’s how each of these GLP-1 receptor agonists is typically administered:

1. Ozempic® (Semaglutide Injection)

  • Administration Method: Subcutaneous Injection

  • How to Administer: Ozempic® is administered as a subcutaneous injection, which means it is injected under the skin. The injection can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It is important to rotate injection sites with each dose to avoid skin irritation or other complications.

  • Frequency: Ozempic® is typically injected once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of the day, with or without food. The dosing schedule is designed to help maintain steady levels of the medication in the body.

2. Saxenda® (Liraglutide Injection)

  • Administration Method: Subcutaneous Injection

  • How to Administer: Saxenda® is also administered as a subcutaneous injection. Like Ozempic®, it can be injected into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, and it is recommended to rotate the injection sites to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

  • Frequency: Saxenda® is injected once daily at any time of the day, independent of meals. The dose is gradually increased over several weeks, starting from a lower dose to minimize potential side effects such as nausea.

3. RYBELSUS® (Oral Semaglutide)

  • Administration Method: Oral Tablet

  • How to Administer: RYBELSUS® is taken orally as a tablet. It should be taken once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medications. It should be taken with no more than 4 ounces of plain water.

Frequency: The tablet is taken once daily. Starting with a low dose, the amount can be increased after a period, depending on how well it is tolerated and its effectiveness.
