Individuals who should avoid taking GoSlim medications

Updated this week

Certain individuals should avoid using GoSlim products based on their medical history, current health conditions, and specific contraindications related to each medication. Here’s a detailed overview of who should avoid using each GoSlim product:

1. Ozempic® (Semaglutide Injection) and RYBELSUS® (Oral Semaglutide)

  • Individuals with a History of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC): People with a personal or family history of MTC should avoid using Ozempic® and RYBELSUS® because these medications have been associated with an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, based on animal studies.

  • Patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2): Those diagnosed with MEN 2, a genetic condition that increases the risk of endocrine tumors, should not use these medications due to the same risk for thyroid tumors.

  • Individuals with a History of Pancreatitis: Since GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic® and RYBELSUS® can increase the risk of pancreatitis, individuals with a history of pancreatitis or severe gastrointestinal disease should avoid these medications.

  • Severe Gastrointestinal Conditions: Patients with severe gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying), should avoid these medications, as they can exacerbate symptoms by further slowing gastric emptying.

2. Saxenda® (Liraglutide Injection)

  • Individuals with a History of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC): Similar to other GLP-1 receptor agonists, those with a personal or family history of MTC should not use Saxenda® due to the potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors.

  • Patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2): Saxenda® is contraindicated in individuals with MEN 2 because of the increased risk of thyroid tumors.

  • Individuals with a History of Pancreatitis: Saxenda® should be avoided in patients with a history of pancreatitis, as the medication can increase the risk of recurrent pancreatitis.

  • Pregnant Women: Saxenda® is not recommended for use during pregnancy because weight loss is not advised during pregnancy, and the effects of Saxenda® on the fetus are not well studied.

  • Breastfeeding Women: Women who are breastfeeding should avoid using Saxenda®, as it is not known whether liraglutide is excreted in human milk or its effects on a nursing infant.

3. Orlistat

  • Patients with Chronic Malabsorption Syndrome: Orlistat is contraindicated in individuals with chronic malabsorption syndrome, a condition that prevents proper absorption of nutrients, because Orlistat further reduces the absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins.

  • Individuals with Cholestasis: People with cholestasis, a condition that impairs the flow of bile from the liver, should avoid Orlistat, as it can exacerbate liver function issues.

  • Pregnant Women: Orlistat is not recommended during pregnancy due to the potential impact on fat absorption, which can affect the nutritional status of both the mother and the developing fetus.

  • Individuals with a Known Allergy to Orlistat: Anyone with a known hypersensitivity to Orlistat or any of its components should avoid using the medication to prevent allergic reactions.

General Recommendations

  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Individuals who have had severe allergic reactions to any component of these medications should avoid their use. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and severe dizziness.

  • Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: It is essential for anyone considering GoSlim products to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure these medications are safe and appropriate based on their personal health history and current medical conditions.
