How does Orlistat work?

Updated over 2 months ago

Orlistat is an oral weight loss medication that is used to help people lose weight or maintain their current weight. It is particularly useful for individuals who have difficulty losing weight through diet and exercise alone. Orlistat works by targeting the digestive system to reduce the amount of fat absorbed from food, thereby decreasing overall calorie intake.

How Does Orlistat Work?

Orlistat works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called lipase, which is essential for breaking down dietary fats in the digestive system. Here’s a closer look at how it functions:

  1. Inhibition of Lipase Enzyme:

  • When you eat, your body releases lipase enzymes in the digestive tract, primarily in the stomach and small intestine. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down fats (triglycerides) into smaller molecules called free fatty acids and monoglycerides, which are then absorbed into the body.

  • Orlistat works by binding to the active sites of these lipase enzymes, preventing them from breaking down the fat molecules. As a result, the fats from your diet remain undigested and are not absorbed into the bloodstream.

Reduction in Calorie Absorption:

  • Since Orlistat blocks the breakdown of fats, approximately 30% of the fat consumed in a meal passes through the digestive system without being absorbed. This undigested fat is then excreted from the body through bowel movements.

  • By reducing the absorption of dietary fats, Orlistat helps create a calorie deficit, which is necessary for weight loss. When combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity, Orlistat can help individuals achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Impact on Health Markers:

  • In addition to promoting weight loss, Orlistat can have positive effects on various health markers. For example, by reducing fat absorption, Orlistat can lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as "bad" cholesterol, which can contribute to improved cardiovascular health.

  • Weight loss achieved through the use of Orlistat can also improve insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for individuals with or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Considerations When Using Orlistat

While Orlistat is effective for weight loss, there are some important considerations to keep in mind:

  • Dietary Fat Intake: Since Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of fat, it can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as oily stools, flatulence, and frequent bowel movements, especially if a high-fat meal is consumed. To minimize these side effects, it is recommended to follow a low-fat diet while taking Orlistat.

  • Vitamin Absorption: Orlistat can also reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and beta-carotene. Individuals using Orlistat are often advised to take a multivitamin supplement containing these vitamins at least two hours before or after taking the medication to ensure adequate nutrient intake.

  • Medical Supervision: Orlistat is a prescription medication and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional, especially for individuals with existing medical conditions or those taking other medications that may interact with Orlistat.
